Palm kernel shell (PKS) is a fibrous by-product of the palm oil industry, specifically the outer shell of the palm fruit kernel. It’s a dark brown color and is used primarily as a biomass fuel source due to its high calorific value and low ash content.
PKS is a high-density material that is rich in carbon and can be used in various applications such as fuel for biomass boilers, charcoal production, and as a raw material for the production of activated carbon.
Using palm kernel shells to cofire with other solid fuels such as wood chips and coal has been successful thanks to their uniform size distribution, scalability, easy handling and applicability with existing logistic set ups.
